The Mac as a Java Development and Execution Platform Many
of my friends and I use some kind of Apple Mac for our work, whether
they're portables, desktop, or server systems. When we're asked
why, our response tends to be something like "the machines are way
cool, and they run Java better."Are you ready to find out if Macs are really the best machines for running Java when it comes to performance? Check out my article published by The Server Side. Note: I probably screwed up the source code package for my editor at The Server Side; they are updating the site now with the correct file. In the meantime, you may download it from here: Java-Performance-test.zip - MD5 sum: 890a84b10943b01b7a9a4de34939baf1 Living on the Edge: Migration to Java 5 at walmart.com How do you upgrade
one of the busiest web applications of the whole Internet to Java 1.5?
This is a challenge under the best conditions, considering that the
application must handle up to 7 million sessions and 106 million page
views per day. This article is a case study of
the Java 1.5 upgrade for the application and subsystems that make up
the walmart.com web site. The article was published by TheServerSide.com in June of 2005. It has one of the highest page view counts this year for TheServerSide.com's site and has been quoted or reproduced (with and without permission) in technology sites all over the world. Aquí está el artículo en español, publicado por la revista Software Guru de México. Is it time to ditch Microsoft Office? The Microsoft website recently hosted a document titled "OpenOffice 1.1 Competitive Guide" among its partner sales pages. It offered Microsoft Office's value proposition against OpenOffice.org, a multi-platform open-source office suite. Microsoft has removed it from its site since. Someone saved it for posterity here (page 1) and here (page 2). My article aims to inform corporate decision makers in both products' capabilities with respect to their organizations' needs. The
article was published by Computerworld on
14.April.2004. It was widely
linked up and discussed by OpenOffice.org and other Open
Source Software (OSS)
organizations. I was still answering "letters to the editor" 10
days after publication. Check it out!The Sushi Eating HOWTO Stop by the sushi bar and order like connossieur. There are several traditions and protocols involved in ordering sushi that we westerners largely ignore. Have you ever wondered how to find an excellent sushi place? Were you ever curious as to how to eat fugu, one of the most poisonous creatures on Earth? Do you know the difference between wasabi and dyed horseradish? The answers are in The Sushi Eating HOWTO, a tongue in cheek source of information presented in the style of a computer help manual: Clearly organized, concise, and accurate. An adventure on I-280 I recently had a car accident, the first one in over 10 years. Nothing got broken, other than the front of my car and my pride as a driver. This very short story (Adobe Acrobat, 9 KB) describes what happened on the freeway -- and why I went back to defensive driving school. Swiss business school interview A group of Swiss business people interviewed me for the MBE4U project at the University of St. Gallen. They were trying to show the reasons why people move from all over the world to Silicon Valley and how well integrated we are to the break neck pace of this region. Andreas Werder, one of the interviewers, is a good friend and senior technology manager at Credit Suisse, in Zürich. The MBE 4 Silicon Valley Handbook is in Word format (201 KB), hosted by the University of St. Gallen. |
